Sonic Mania was a true return to form for the mascot, in his 2D ‘Classic’ guise at least, and celebrated the glory days of the original games while also enhancing their qualities and taking on new ideas. From new areas, imaginative second acts and some delightful boss encounters, the development team poured a lot of passion and talent into the project. Sonic Mania Plus takes that solid foundation and – in all honestly – doesn’t do a great deal to mess with it. The new characters and modes are welcome, and there are some neat tweaks which iron out some of the kinks present in the original release, but on the whole this is an enhanced edition of the game rather than a feature-rich update. If you’ve still not sampled the delights of Sonic Mania then this is clearly the version to get, but if you’re an existing owner then the low asking price of the DLC update make this well worth a look; we’ll take any excuse to dive back into one of the best 2D platformers of recent memory.

Nintendo Switch finally has its first great horror game in Layers Of Fear Legacy. The creativity in its scares helps to keep you guessing about what’s around every corner, and even then, its unique set-pieces will most certainly surprise you anyway. Slightly lacklustre gameplay aside, the plot’s descent into madness, the title’s dedication to messing with your expectations to set up a scare, and the simple fact that this is a solid Switch port, means that this is horrific experience is one you won’t want to miss out on.

Poignant and moving in both theme and execution, Fe is one of the most unique platformers on Nintendo Switch. Its platforming can be a little hit and miss, and its stealth feels a little too forgiving at times, but that doesn’t stop its world and the unique vocal premise from bewitching you with a dark and Gothic Nordic fairytale. While it’s not as groundbreaking as other dialogue-less games such as Journey, it’s still one of the most intriguing worlds to explore on Switch, and proof Zoink Games is more than just a one joke pony.

The comparisons to Nintendo’s much-loved Metroid franchise might seem excessive, but A Robot Named Fight makes little effort to differentiate itself from the source material it has been inspired by. What it does manage to do is provide endless replay value with its procedural generated platform action, unique items and large variety of enemies. The co-op mode is also a welcomed inclusion. The trade-off here, as mentioned, is no real story or character development beyond the basics to motivate you to save the day and the repetitive nature associated with permadeath. If you can look past this, what’s on offer is a satisfying alternative to the space adventures of Samus.

88 Heroes – 98 Heroes Edition took on the gargantuan challenge of cramming 98 playable characters into a single game, and while we commend the attempt the results have been a little shy of heroic. There’s so much diversity to the size, shape, and moveset of each hero, that it comes at the cost of a more tightly designed set of levels and challenges. There’s a lot of personality to every aspect of its presentation, and the heroes themselves are fantastic fun to mess around with, so it’s just a shame that it falls a little short overall. If you’re looking for something thoroughly silly and don’t mind it being a short lived experience, then this is almost gr8, but don’t expect much in the way of replayability m8.

Both classic Dragon Quest RPG and Minecraft-style building sim, Dragon Quest Builders takes just enough ingredients from each side of the developmental kitchen and gently stirs them into a dish that never manages to overpower either of its core mechanics. Brawlout core action is a lot of fun; with a huge amount of ideas inspired by genre greats such as Super Smash Bros., the action feels tight, fast, and can be a pleasure to play. The limited character roster means that attack variations can only go so far, and some performance hiccups prevent Brawlout from being truly wonderful, but for an on-the-go, cheaper alternative to a game that hasn’t even been announced for the console yet, this isn’t a bad choice – just make sure to keep the issues we mentioned in mind.

1-2-Switch does a great job of showing off the unique feature set of the Switch and its Joy-Con controllers, but it’s seriously lacking in long-term appeal. When played with a group of friends or family members it’s a proper hoot, and has the same social gaming appeal that made Wii Sports a living room tradition for so many households all over the world, but there’s no escaping the fact that many of these mini-games lack longevity; some are so basic that they fail to maintain your interest past the first go, no matter how inebriated you and your pals happen to be.For a retail game, 1-2-Switch feels a little anemic, and would have been much better suited as a pack-in title. Nintendo has countered this stance by claiming that it couldn’t bundle the game due to cost, but including a download code with each Switch sold wouldn’t have incurred any real physical expense – beyond lost retail sales, of course – and that would have been a sensible trade-off when you consider how solid an advert this game is for the system. How many people were sold on the Wii’s merits simply by witnessing Wii Sports at a friend’s house? By refusing to bundle 1-2-Switch with the base system, Nintendo has missed out on the kind of exposure that marketing simply cannot buy you; as a stand-alone release it feels too fleeting and ephemeral, but as a free pack-in it would arguably have been much more appealing.

Outlast 2 ramps up the tension and the technical achievement from the original, with one of the most stunningly atmospheric game worlds around. The level design has expanded along with your stealth options, creating a handful of truly memorable moments. It definitely isn’t for everyone, though. Themes of religious perversion and abuse make Outlast 2 (un)comfortably the most horrific experience on Switch, while the limitations of its stealth mechanics can try the patience.

The difference between Outlast and most other survival horror games is that you’re completely defenceless against the crazed inmates and pumped up abominations that lurk within the asylum walls. It kind of resembles the old ‘Nemesis’ system from many of the Resident Evil games, whereby an implacable foe stalks you across a whole game. Here, though, even an ordinary stooge can end you in a couple of successive strikes, with no hope of retaliation. Your only options are to run away or hide. Fortunately, you do have a few evasive manoeuvres at your disposal. Outlast Bundle of Terror is a generous package of finely crafted survival horror thrills. It looks and sounds great on Nintendo Switch, and while its brand of hide-and-seek gameplay occasionally falters, it’ll still keep you playing right until the grisly end.

Still, the game does a superb job of striking a balance between being an easy route of entry for newcomers to the series and offering just enough post-game challenge and competitive play elements (and nostalgia, of course) to please series veterans; as a result, these new titles really do offer something for everyone, which can’t always be said of the mainline Pokemon entries. They might not be an absolute masterpiece, but we’d urge any Poké-fans out there to give these ones a go – if a Let’s Go Johto sequel is on the cards, we’ll happily be there waiting in line.

Super Smash :Bros Ultimate Vocal concerns about past games have been actively addressed, every single fighter from the series is present (even Pichu), the customisability is overwhelmingly vast and it’s all topped off with super-solid single-player modes to boot. We’re not sure how you could make a more robust or pleasing Smash game. Super Smash Bros Ultimate truly is the ultimate instalment in the series, and it makes you wonder where Sakurai can possibly take this franchise next.
